What is an Industrial Hydraulic Gear Pump?

A hydraulic gear pump is a positive displacement fluid power generator that uses the mechanical engagement of two precision-cut rotating gears to pump incompressible fluid under pressure. One gear is driven directly by the prime mover shaft (the driver gear), while the second gear meshes with it (the driven or idler gear).

As the gear teeth unmesh on the suction side, they create expanding internal volume and a localized low-pressure zone that draws hydraulic oil from the reservoir through a submerged Suction Strainer. The oil is trapped within the individual tooth cavities and carried around the outer casing perimeter to the discharge port. When the teeth mesh back together on the outlet side, the fluid is displaced positively into the circuit—driving Hydraulic Cylinders and valve circuits via Manifold Blocks.

As a specialized hydraulic gear pump manufacturer in Ahmedabad, Honeywell Hydraulics engineers pumps specifically suited for continuous heavy industrial cycles. We incorporate pressure-balanced bronze wear plates that automatically minimize gear tip and side clearances as pressure rises, maintaining high volumetric efficiency (>90%) without thermal binding.

How to Select the Right Hydraulic Gear Pump

When selecting an industrial gear pump, hydraulic design engineers must evaluate three primary operating factors:

01

Required Flow (LPM)

Calculated from cylinder bore, stroke length, and required travel speed in seconds. Sized using: LPM = [Displacement (cc) × RPM × Efficiency] ÷ 1000.

02

Working Pressure (Bar)

Determine continuous working pressure vs peak transient relief valve pressure. Group 2 aluminum pumps handle up to 210–250 Bar, while cast iron models exceed 280 Bar.

03

Single vs Tandem Pump

If your machine requires high flow for approach and high pressure for clamping, select a Tandem Gear Pump to reduce motor kilowatt size by up to 50%.

An external hydraulic gear pump is a positive displacement machine comprising two interlocking gears (a driver gear coupled to the motor and a driven idler gear) housed inside a tight-tolerance casing. As the gear teeth unmesh on the inlet side, they create expanding volume that draws fluid from the reservoir. The fluid is trapped between the gear teeth and pump housing, carried around the outer perimeter, and discharged under pressure as the teeth mesh together on the outlet port side.

Gear pump groups denote standardized physical casing dimensions, mounting bolt pitch, and displacement capacity. Group 1 pumps are compact units (displacements typically 0.8 to 8.0 cc/rev) suited for low-flow, high-speed applications. Group 2 is the most prevalent industrial standard (4 to 30 cc/rev) used in standard 3-phase and 1-phase power packs. Group 3 pumps feature larger gear diameters (20 to 90 cc/rev) engineered for heavy-duty industrial pressing, baling, and mobile machinery.

A tandem gear pump should be chosen when a machine requires two distinct hydraulic flow rates or operating pressures and you want to avoid adding a second electric motor. By driving two pump stages with a single shaft, a tandem pump cuts electrical motor costs, reduces control cabinet footprint, and allows dedicated high-low press circuits (high flow for rapid travel, low flow for high-pressure clamping).

Calculate pump flow rate in Liters Per Minute (LPM) using: Flow (LPM) = [Displacement (cc/rev) × Electric Motor RPM × Volumetric Efficiency (%)] ÷ 1000. For example, a 10 cc/rev gear pump driven by a standard 4-pole motor (1440 RPM) at 92% volumetric efficiency delivers: (10 × 1440 × 0.92) ÷ 1000 ≈ 13.2 LPM.

The three primary causes of gear pump failure are fluid contamination, cavitation, and overheating. Preventative measures include: installing a 100–149 micron suction strainer to shield pump gears from tank debris, keeping suction lines short and straight to prevent negative vacuum pressures below -0.2 bar, maintaining clean return line filtration (10–25 micron), and verifying operating fluid viscosity stays within 20 to 100 cSt at running temperatures.
